Pay attention…Just be there. Don’t be thinking about a solution, or how you should fix it. Just listen hard and try to be present. I learned as a child that cows are good listeners. They focus their big brown eyes on you and twitch their ears as you talk. This is a great antidote to the critical listening that humans usually practice, where we invite heartfelt speech and then don’t listen with the intent to understand, just with the intent to reply, listening only for the mistake, or the flaw in the argument. Cows, by contrast, manage at least the appearance of deep, openhearted attention. We can learn a great deal about mindfulness from cows.
